Folio 278. Letter from W E Goodacre, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board. Reporting the following cases of able bodied men out of employment given temporary outdoor relief and requesting for a sanction under article 6 of the Prohibitory order. 1. John Thompson a framework knitter, wife and nine children; person of diminutive stature, weakly habits, unfit for laborious work. Relief given by relieving officer on 24 May in food and destitution 6s 11d confirmed and 3s and four loaves ordered for one week, 31 May the same relief ordered for further two weeks. 2. Isaiah Banner reported in letter of 23 May, confirmed in letter of 29 May, number Paper Number: 20387/1855. Ordered 3s and 16lbs of bread for further two weeks. 3. John Gilbert a framework knitter, wife and six children; the two elder children earning 4s per week. Ordered 16lbs of bread for one week. Annotated: sanction but write as is suggested in 23215/1855. Is there any 'labour test order' in this union and if so is it acted upon? Outdoor Labour Order issued to the Mansfield Union 25 May 1847. It is not in force and it has not been. The want of employment was not expected to continue for more than a few weeks - and if there are any more reports I shall advise that the workhouse labour shall be applied on them. 22159/1855. Poor Law Union Number 337. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
