Description
Content
Folios 39-40. Letter from W and E Willoby [William Willoby and Edward Willoby], Clerks to the Guardians of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Poor Law Union, to Edwin Chadwick [Secretary to the Poor Law Commission] regarding witness expenses. The letter refers to the Commission's letter of 31 August 1844 regarding witnesses expenses for the investigation of Mr Black's [Ebenezer Black, Guardian for Grindon] case before Hawley [W H Toovey Hawley, Assistant Commissioner], and the letter of 22 June 1844 forwarding a copy of the order for the allowances to the witnesses to be paid from the funds of the union. Following the guardians' meeting held Tuesday last, with Hawley present, at which the order and the amount awarded to each witness was considered, the guardians note that George Dippie travelled from Glanton to Buckton, a distance of 23 miles, and Mr Thompson travelled from Bolton to Ancroft, about the same distance. As these distances exceed ten miles the order under the statute does not apply. Annotated: 5 March 1845 by Hawley, that the distances stated to have been travelled are correct. Annotated: 10 March by W G L [William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission], that the Commission is prepared to pay Thompson and Dippie by a Post Office order if not already paid by the guardians. They presume that the other witnesses have been paid and regret that they were not provided with the present information earlier. Paper number: 2596/A/1845. Poor Law Union Number 325. Counties: Town and County of Berwick-upon-Tweed and Northumberland.
