Description
Content
Folios 495-496. Letter from Henry Edwards Paine, Clerk to the Guardians of the Rye Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission concerning fees paid to collectors of rates. He states that it would simplify the calculation and payment of fees to rate collectors in the parishes of Rye, Iden, Playden, Guldeford, Broomhill and Peasmarsh if there were a uniform poundage payable, instead of the poundage of 4d and 8d which the Commission introduced with its order dated 27 October 1836. Paine has calculated a single rate of poundage for each parish which would result in the collectors receiving the same total fees as they do at present but would be much simpler to administer. The guardians wish to adopt that system. Paine requests the consent of the Commission to the proposed change. Annotated: by G C [George Coode, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission], that the higher poundage for the lower rates was intended to give the collectors a motive to collect them. To decline to accede. Paper number: 14518/B/1842. Poor Law Union Number 484. Counties: Sussex and Kent.
