Description
Content
Folios 86-93. Letter from W B Baring [MP Staffordshire], 12 Stanhope Street, to George Nicholls [Poor Law Commissioner], sending copy of resolutions of a Wolstanton Select Vestry meeting and a covering note. 1. Note from Wolstanton reporting a meeting on 14 February 1838 of the select vestry, John Wood, Chairman. Motion proposed by Allen Booth, seconded Edward Wood, that a union with Burslem be strongly deprecated, and if the parish is not left alone, then the single large union [with Newcastle and Burslem] is preferred. Booth and William Cartledge propose that a memorial be sent, via Smith Child to W B Baring MP, for the Poor Law Commission, and John Adams and Edward Wood are to 'see Misses Fentons' to draw up a petition. 2. Memorial to the Commission from churchwardens, overseers of poor, select vestry and ratepayers of Wolstanton to protest at the refusal of the Commission to accept the previous memorial objecting to union with Burslem. If union is unavoidable then the preference is for single union of Newcastle, Audley, Betley, Whitmore, Madeley, Balterley, Keele and Burslem.
