Description
Content
Folios 75-77. Letter from Thomas Stevens, [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], to George Nicholls [Poor Law Commissioner], with an observation on Nicholls' health and noting that Wolstanton is the best name for the proposed 'Pottery Union', it being the most convenient place for guardians to meet. He does not anticipate riots in this area as the influential people have promised to enforce the new regulations and trade will probably be improved by the time the union is instituted. However a risk there must be and best to be hoped for is that the influential people will give full support. He hopes that Senior will return with him as his company will be welcome when unions start. Has not heard anything about Glossop [Derbyshire] but hopes it will be sanctioned and feels that it is important that it prosper being so near to Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne [Lancashire]. Also important to avoid separate parishes as otherwise costs go up and current officials only sufficient if accounts are simplified by consolidation. [Folio 75 is the year guard for 1838.] Paper number: 50/C/1837. Poor Law Union Number 415. Counties: Staffordshire.
