Folios 1A-3. Letter from Joseph Lowndes, Vestry Clerk, Wolstanton to the Poor Law Commission, seeking advice on behalf of the churchwardens and overseers of the poor on a case of two people in the parish workhouse; one a blind man aged 39 from Stockport, [Cheshire]; the other a female aged 29 with three illegitimate children. They are determined to marry, have had banns called once, but the vicar on request from the parish officers has delayed further action until the Commissioners have ruled on whether the parish officers have the power to prevent the marriage so long as these persons reside in the workhouse. Complete separation of sexes is not possible in the workhouse and a similar case has occurred previously. Annotated: refer to G Coode [George Coode, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission].
