Description

1 collective petition (William Smith and Ann Smith, grandparents of prisoner, and 7 people of Stratford-sub-Castle including boy's master) on behalf of James Smith, convicted at Wiltshire Quarter Sessions April 1828 for the assault of Diana Allsop with intent to ravish [rape] on January 25 1828. There are also 2 covering letters from Mr Rose. Grounds for clemency: youth of 16, has no parents [only aged grandparents], girl appeared to consent, was only prosecuted because her mistress noticed her torn apron. Initial sentence: 1 year's imprisonment. Annotated: nil. HN53
