Had complained to his mess mates of a pain in his right arm and headache for some days prior to his seizure. The Surgeon first saw him lying extended on the deck insensible and having strong convulsive contortions. On regaining consciousness he had lost the use of his right arm. On 27 January a second seizure was followed by 'a complete fit of mania', requiring four guards to hold him and the Surgeon to extract three pints of blood before he lost consciousness. A strait waistcoat was made out of a hospital sheet but he remained quiet. He did not recover the use of his arm, at the time of the Surgeon’s last note, 30 March 1825, and an attendant had been trained in the use of a tourniquet to prevent further seizures. The Surgeon wonders if electricity may restore the arm and resolves to suggest it on their arrival in New South Wales [folio 16].
