Scurvy appeared about 16 January when 30 of the guard and convicts were found to have spongy gums attended with prostration of strength and loss of appetite, fullness and general pains of the extremities. McAuliffe or Macawley was the first victim. He was a Jew and so affected by the disgrace of transportation that he was never seen to smile.
