Description (What the record is about)
-
Copy letter from Robert Mylne, John Rennie and J. Huddart reporting on the attempts to remove the mud accumulating in front of Woolwich Yard. Have reviewed the calculations of Commissioner Cunningham relating to the quantity of mud removed by the contractors and workmen employed on the task as well as proposals from Messrs. Mills, Bough and Hughes. Report and length and in detail a survey of the impediments to the flow of the Thames and the causes of the accumulation of mud in front of Woolwich Yard. Calculate that the dredging necessary to fully restore the yard would take five years and cost £152,000 and that the annual expense of mud removal thereafter would be £8,400. Since the many sand banks and shoals from Longreach to Woolwich render that part of the river unsuitable for larger ships, the yard should be used for the fitting of ships no larger than frigates..
