Description (What the record is about)
-
Copy letter from Robert Mylne, J. Huddart and John Rennie reporting the completion of a survey and large-scale map of the Thames from the navigable cut above Blackwall to the mouth of Barking Creek (not now attached) [UK Hydrographic Office Ref: L4524 Press 16a] Explain in detail and at length the reasons for the accumulation of mud and waste in front of Woolwich Yard, including the building of many new sewers draining into the river at Westminster and Southwark and the blockage caused by London Bridge. Opine that the yard is incapable of restoration owing to the enormous expense of removing the accumulated mud and the futility of the task. Conclude that the yard should no longer be used for the fitting of large warships but should instead be used for storage, the building and fitting of smaller warships or as an adjunct to Woolwich Warren..
