Description

Messrs Grenfell and Williams, London, to the Board. Give the various costs incurred when remanufacturing copper at Portsmouth Dockyard for which the contractor undertakes the cost of collection and delivery. They claim the quality is unlikely to be superior as the men employed at the Dockyard have been trained and previously employed by the contractor, until tempted by extravagant wages to leave. Claim that the appearance of sheets seen at Portsmouth last summer were so inferior that if supplied by the contractors, would have been rejected for the same reasons 145 sheets sent by the Contractor, Mr Spidding, to Plymouth Yard in September 1804 were rejected. Contend that the establishment formed in Portsmouth Yard, by the recommendation of Brigadier General Bentham is both expensive and useless to the public, whilst the manufacturer's interests have been injured..
