Folios 105-107. Letter from Richard B Cox, W Iremonger, [John ----, ---- Curtis] and two others, magistrates of Andover, [Hampshire]. The letter reports that the appearance of the military has assisted in suppressing open violence, which had become common in the area, and enabled the apprehension of some of the people who perpetrated the outrage at the iron foundry near the town. They continue by saying that despite this the power of the magistrates has not been re-established, especially as there is a general reluctance, from all classes, to assist them. The letter also mentions an enclosure, a paper announcing the resolutions of the magistrates in a prior meeting, and the fact that its contents may cause more trouble.
The resolutions were made at a recent meeting of the magistrates. That the 'occupiers of land' in the area should pay the following rates of pay: able men over 20 years 12/- per week, able men aged 16 to 20 years 9/- per week, and, old and infirm people 3/- per week. They also recommend that a gallon loaf of bread and 6d be given to married men for every child above the number of 2 and over the age of one month. The announcement continues to say a further meeting will be held on 27 November 1830, at the Star and Garter Inn, Andover, where the 'occupiers of the land' who have agreed to the resolutions will meet with land owners and tithe proprietors to agree arrangements, which will enable them to do this.
Also lists the 'occupiers of the land' who have agreed to the resolutions as: John Sweetapple, Phillip Henry Pope, Richard Fortesque, Henry Tredgold, Thomas Dowling, Joseph Wakeford, John Lynwood, Robert Pickering, Charles Cheyney, George Guyatt, George Dawkins, Edward Ranger, Charles Holdway, John Reeves, William Long [Senior], Robert Pocock, William Goodall, George Dowling, William Sweetapple, Samuel Guyatt, William Dowling, Robert Dowling, Abraham Goater, Henry King, Henry Cordery, George Dowling, Thomas Spencer, Nicholas Cole, William Attwood, John Holloway, Charles Mundy, Hugh Mundy, William Moon, Thomas Biggs, John Kellow, Thomas Hutchins, Thomas Longman, William Child, Mary Lawes, John Young, John Chandler, George Chandler, William Chandler, George Young, William Leveredge, Susan Batt, Thomas Baugh, John Cole, Harry Church, Charles Church, John Herbert, William Moore, Thomas Sutton, Robert Longman, Henry Poore, George Marshment, Henry Simes, James Cole, Robert Tilbury, William Hilliard, John Knowles, Robert Tilbury [Junior], Robert Martin, Robert Cole, Hugh Child, Ann Cole, Anthony Kersley and John Hooper.
