Report of G Wood on 6 individual petitions (the prisoner [x3]; Richard Meade, and the prosecutor) and 3 collective petitions (2 people, the prisoner and the prosecutor [x2]; and 150 people of Southwark, [Surrey]) on behalf of Philip Cater/Philip Keating/Philip Caton (tried with Daniel Carroll) and convicted at the Surrey Assizes held at Kingston upon Thames on 30 March 1822 for the 'street robbery' of a watch and assault on Samuel Mason. Evidences supplied by Samuel Mason, Thomas Kirkpatrick, Richard Cook, Samuel Miller, police officer; Joseph Snow, James Cane[?], officer of Union Hall and Sarah Lane. There are letters from [the Earl of] Clanwilliam [x2], William Walter and another [signature illegible]; and a return stating that the prisoner was previously tried at the Kingston Assizes in March 1821 for highway robbery, (acquitted) and the Newington [Quarter?] Sessions in July 1821, sent to the house of correction as a reputed thief, (discharged by proclamation). Grounds for clemency: youth, has aged parents and no violence was used. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: transportation for life. Folios 177-203.
