Report of J Bayley on 1 collective petition (21 people, including the mayor of Coventry, aldermen and a curate) on behalf of Thomas Taylor convicted at Coventry Lent Assizes in March 1812 of stealing a parcel of silk, value £8 from a cart in Coventry. There is a certificate of good behaviour from John Hasall[?], keeper of the house of correction and letters from Isaac Shaw (stating his willingness to train Taylor as a weaver and recommended as a master by two aldermen) and Samuel Vale, mayor of Coventry. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner has already suffered 12 months imprisonment, he has aged parents who are suffering poverty and grief, he is an only child, if granted mercy he will devote his life to religion and industry and the prisoner has a relative who is willing to train him as a weaver. Initial sentence: 2 years imprisonment in the Coventry House of Correction. Recommendation: mercy. Folios 264-271.
