Report of Robert Alderson, Recorder of Ipswich on 1 collective petition (36 people of Ipswich, Suffolk) on behalf of John Ranson, sawyer convicted at Suffolk Quarter Sessions held at Ipswich on 23 September 1812 of stealing half a 'furkin' of butter, value £3, and 50lbs of lead, value 4/- on 5 July 1812 and 25 July 1812, from a vessel, property of Edward Studd. There is a covering letter to the petition from T S Ashton, solicitor. Grounds for clemency: wishes to serve in one of HM Forces and has a family in distress. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy as the prisoner was known to be part of a gang of thieves. The recorder expects petitions to come from the other members of the gang, Garwood, Gladdery, Doaves and Haywood. Folios 231-234.
