Originally known as "The Circulating Family Library of the Parish of Burgh by Sands, March, A.D. 1850" (see e.g. Cat. Nos. 48, 49), it later became known as the "Burgh Sabbath School Library" (the books bear its bookplate, each with catalogue-number, pasted on top of the 1850 inscription); the books are small bound volumes, for the edification and instruction of their users; the print is mostly small; many are illustrated; many are published by the Religious Tract Society (London, 19th-century, but n.d. on their title-pages), marked "R.T.S." in this list; several have been re-numbered on the bookplates.
