ASKWITH Edward Private No 57891 119 Company Machine Gun Corps Aged 32
Killed in action in France 24 November 1917

Born in Grove St, Liverpool on 4 March 1885 Edward ‘Teddy’ Askwith was the son of Edward Askwith (ironmonger)
and Frances Eunice Askwith. Little is known about his early life other than on leaving school he took up a trade
as a joiner.
The 1901 census shows the family living at 116 Holt Road, Edward was 16 years old and already working as a
joiner, his father (aged 56) was an ironmonger’s assistant and his mother was 43 years old. Also at home were
his siblings Annie aged 20 working as a school teacher, William H aged 19 and a draughtsman, Norman aged 18
a commercial clerk, Sidney aged 14 also a commercial clerk and Mark E aged 7.
Edward’s father died on 3rd January 1908 and was buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery. Frances continued to live
at 116 Holt Road, the 1911 census shows her as head of the household at this address, she was 54 years old,
a widow and working as a dressmaker. Three of her sons were still at home: Edward aged 26 and working as a joiner,
Norman aged 28 working as a shipping clerk and Mark Ernest aged 17 and a clerk. The census forms show that 6
of Frances’s 7 children survived.
Edward was not to stay in the family home for much longer, on 25 December 1911 ‘Teddy’ married 23-year old
Greta Pape, daughter of David Pape of 118 Kensington, in St Cyprian’s Church. They had a daughter, Greta, born
21 April 1915 and christened in Edge Hill.
Edward enlisted in Liverpool as No 35954 in the Lancashire Fusiliers and was subsequently transferred, as No
57891, to the 119th Company of the Machine Gun Corps.
Edward Askwith was reported missing in action, aged 32, on 24 November 1917. A year later he was officially
listed as killed in action on that date. His body was not recovered from the battlefield and identified so he
has no known grave and his name is now commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial in France. At the time of his death
his widow and child were living at 5 Stamford Street, Liverpool.
