Description (What the record is about)
-
This map depicts the old and new beds of the Helmund [Helmand] River at its junction with the Pariun [Parian] branch near the disputed border between Afghanistan and Persia [Iran], to illustrate the tour undertaken by HM Consul, Seistan [Sistan], Major Robert Arthur Edward Benn, in September 1902. The map shows the present and old beds of the Helmund, the diversion of which has been cause for dispute between Afghanistan and Persia. Features shown on the river include tributary streams and branches, channels, and bunds. Other features include settlements, ruins, a ford, and an area of cultivation. A reference note below the map outlines the old and present beds of the Helmund, the sites of the bunds on the river, the route of Benn's tour, and the Goldsmid Boundary. The map is dated 30 September 1902 and bears Benn's printed signature and two printing statements: '(60 . 12/1902.1394) 1565 F[oreign]. O[ffice].' and 'Harrison & Sons Lith[ographer]. St Martins Lane, W. C.'.
