Michaelmas 1777: Examination of William Moore, alias Thomas Monroe: born at Bixley, Norfolks., & went with his mother strolling & peddling stockings - at 15 lived with his uncle, a brazier with a shop in Norwich & stayed with him 5 years - he came to Shipston on Stour doing jobbing work & to Chipping Campden where he married - has travelled the country dealing in earthenware which is carried on asses - a little time ago he started as a doctor to cure worms & other curses of the fair sex & styled himself Thomas Monroe, son of Henry Monroe, a famous physician in New England. Believes his settlement is Bixley being the bastard son of Elizabeth Moore.
