Description (What the record is about)

[In 1634 John Blackwell promised 20 nobles on the building of a school house [2414/4/1 fo.84v]. By order of the Vestry of 24 Oct 1670 [2414/4/2] the building on the north side of the church was to be reserved for a school house.
In 1720 Edward Colston gave money for teaching 12 boys and 12 girls by his will [2414/9/307].
By her will of 1719 Lady Capel gave the profits of an estate in Kent to be shared between twelve charity schools including Mortlake [2414/9/104]. Later benefactors were Abigail Franks in 1810 [2414/9/346-349], the Hon. Miss Best [2414/9/89], Lady Charlotte Penrhyn, Viscount Sidmouth [2414/9/79], Lady Addington [2414/9/79, 92] and the Duchess of Gloucester [2414/9/91]. In 1848 the site of the former workhouse was acquired for a master's house and school building [2414/9/60, 82-88]. A further site was conveyed by Thomas Keane Fitzgerald in 1874 [2414/9/96].
