Subsequently, when his officer was wounded he continued to command the section in a cool and skillful manner.;

Original Citation in 55 Div Papers (Liverpool Library) "for gallantry and initiative during the attacks on Festubert E Keep on 9th & 11th April (1918). Sgt Rough's section in the initial attack inflicted very heavy heavy casualties on the enemy, his four guns being very largely instrumental in preventing them from reaching Festubert. During the second attack on the KEEP, when his four guns were destroyed by shellfire he and his men fought on with bombs and when the garrison had been forced back, he took charge of an infantry Lewis Gun with two of his men. On the 15th, when his four guns had been replaced, his section officer was wounded and Sgt Rough continued to command the section in a cool and skilful manner. (Immediate Award- DCM) recommended by Lt WT Hall, OC "B" Boy 55 Bn MGC, Lt Col HW Bolton, Cdg 55 Bn MGC and Brig L Boyd-Moss Cdg 165 Inf Bde. Signed H J Jeudwine, Maj Gen, Cdg 55 Div.
