6th Jan. 1853. Fred: Thynne to J.F.Maddock, asking for particulars of sale.
10th Jan. 1853. Geo. Cram at Chester to E.Roberts, Esq., desiring to purchase a piece of ground from the Corporation between the Holyhead Railway and the River at the end of his building yard, as he is about to lay down some large vessels. He wishes to buy rather than take a lease because of the expence of building a river wall and erecting buildings.
10th Jan. 1853. Printed summons for a Monthly Council meeting to be held on Friday next, with a note of business. Manuscript notes have been added showing which measures were adopted, etc.
13th Jan. 1853. John Philpot from 20 Montague Street, Russell Square, to J, Finchett Maddock, re St. John's Hospital, sending a copy of minutes of an order made on the petition for carrying out the compromise, The money is to be paid into court on 12th Feb.
20th Jan. 1853. Sam. Davis to Mr. Jones. The Town Clerk had had no answer yet respecting the money proposed to be borrowed. Mr. Broadhurst was to have written to him weeks ago to say the money could not be advanced on such security.
21st Jan. 1853. John Philpot to J.Finchett Maddock concerning the investment of the "Holyhead money".
24th Jan. 1853. Fred: Thynne, from 11 Gt. George St., Westminster, to J.Finchett Maddock concerning the investment of the "Holyhead money". As none of the lots in which he is interested are disposed of at Hough Green adjoining the Curzon Park road, he asks whether the land adjoining the road may be sold or leased to Lord Howe without any conditions of houses and buildings being erected.
24th Jan. 1853. Thos.Poole, printer, from Cross, Chester, to J.Finchett Maddock concerning the investment of the "Holyhead money". He could not attend the last sale of land at Hough Green and would be obliged if Committee would call another sale.
29th Jan. 1853. Notice to Edward Roberts from Town Clerk, to attend the Corporate Estate Committee on Monday next -- with note from Ed. Roberts, dated 31st Jan. to Mr. Paul, asking him to state to the committee that several gardens in Tower Field will be vacant from 2nd Feb. and that he has not had a single eligible application. If the committee do not wish to cultivate them with provender for the horses perhaps the Surveyor would set up boards with notices that they are to be let.
31st Jan. 1853. Wm.A.Rowland, plumber, 46 Crane Street, to the Chairman of Corporate Estate Committee. Mr. P.Ducker is giving up garden No. 54 in the Tower Field on 2nd Feb. and he applies to take it at a moderate rent for the benefit of his health.
2nd Feb. 1853. John Hughes from 57 Mill St., to Messrs. Aspinall & Son. He apologises for not replying to the letters sent by Mr. Maddock and asks for a few days longer to settle his account. With envelope.
5th Feb. 1853. John Greenwood from the Treasury, to the Town Clerk, returning draft mortgages, from the Corporation to Searancke and to Done, for engrossment.
5th Feb. 1853. R.Dutton to J.F.Maddock. He is advised by his solicitor, Mr. Broadhurst of Nantwich, that a mortgage on the Corporate property is not such security as can justify a Trustee in advancing the money, so he cannot consent to Mr. Jones' proposition.
8th Feb. 1853. J.Fischer, from R.Mint, to E.Roberts, stating that they are at present out of farthings but the application by the Town Council has been registered. With envelope.
9th Feb. 1853. John Philpot to J.Finchett Maddock concerning payment into court re St. John's.
n.d. Notice of motion from Jno. Hope for the Council meeting on 11th Feb.- that the Improvement be requested to furnish a list of all the streets or parts of streets within the Borough which have been laid out and formed since the year 1825 and to specify therein those instances in which the requirements of the Improvement Act have been carried out. And to report further whether the Improvement Act contains any clauses for preventing the erection of dwelling houses in confined situations.
25th Feb. 1853. Frederick Potts at Chester to the Chairman of Corporate Estate Committee re the removal of some of the trees growing along the Rope Walk between the Suspension Bridge and Mrs. Williamson's house.
26th Feb. 1853. William Dawson from Saltney, applying to purchase a small piece of land there, adjoining that lately purchased by him.
3rd March 1853. Peter Wright from Liverpool to William Wardell, Esq, Chester, recommending Mr. Benjamin Drury, the principal warden of their borough gaol, for the post of Governor of the Gaol of the City of Chester, which he understands is in the gift of the Magistrates.
3rd March 1853. John Rubie, Policeman No.501, from London and N.W.Railway, Huyton Lane Station, near Liverpool, to John Finchett Maddock, sending information concerning the family of H.Nelson Ting, from Cork, mentioned in the Police Gazette of the 2nd inst. as wanted for felony.
7th March 1853. Geo. Palmer from Birkenhead to the Mayor and Magistrates of Chester, applying for the post as Governor of the City Gaol.
10th March 1853. Harry from 98 Belgrave Terrace, Everton Road, Anderick (?) to 'Jim' [James Paul?]. Personal news.
7th March 1853. Frederick Livesley Peter Fogg from Hulme, Manchester, to the Mayor and Magistrates, applying for the post of Governor of the City Gaol.
8th March 1853. Similar application to Frederick Livesley Peter Fogg from William Shone, from 86 Watergate Street, Chester.
10th March 1853. Jas.Arnott from Guildhall, Newcastle on Tyne to J.F.Maddock, informing him that the Governor of the Gaol is there appointed by the Sheriff of the town and county.
10th March 1853. Wm. Dunn (?) from Lancaster, to J.F.Maddock, informing him that they have no Borough Gaol within Lancaster but use the County Gaol under a contract with the County.
11th March 1853. Town Clerk, Bristol, to J.F.Maddock, stating that the Governor of their City Gaol is elected under the provisions of a Local Act, by the Sheriff with the assent of the Magistrates.
11th March 1853. L.C. Tarn for the Town Clerk, Hull, to J.F.Maddock. The Sheriff of the Borough and County of Hull appoints his own gaoler by 14 Ed:3.c.10. The Magistrates appoint the Keeper of the House of Correction under 4 Geo.IV.cap64. In practice the Sheriff appoints his gaoler, then recommends him to the Justices for the appointment as Keeper of the House of Correction. The powers the Town Council has are by 5 & 6 Will.4.c.38 &c. but the great check on the Justices they have by 1 Vic.cap.78 & 38 by which they confirm all orders for expenditure and approve salaries.
12th March 1853. John Gidley, Town Clerk of Exeter, to J.F.Maddock. The Corporation appointed the Governor of the City Gaol prior to the Municipal Reform Act, since when no appointment has taken place, under the powers of a local Act for building the Gaol, but the power of appointing a Gaoler was vested in and exercised by them before this Act.
14th March 1853. Geo.Harding from Priory, Carnarvon, concerning the death of his wife and settling the balance due to Thomas Jones.
19th March 1853. Fred: Thynne from 11 Gt. George St. Westminster, to J.Finchett Maddock. Lord Howe is willing to take a lease of the ground at the rent named provided he may have a ninety-nine year term.
24th March 1853. John Philpot to J.Finchett Maddock, concerning records relating to St. John's Hospital. The case re the City Gaol is with Mr. Welch.
1st April 1853. John Varley for Saml. Varley from Stanningley nr. Leeds, to J.Finchett Maddock. He will forward the grey prison cloth required in 10 days.
3rd April 1853. Tho. Hepworth for J.P.Fearon, from 21 Great George Street, Westminster, to Edwd. Roberts, Esq., suggesting a meeting to discuss his analysis of the Corporation's proposed terms of compromise in Attorney General v. Corporation of Chester.
4th April 1853. Thomas Clare at Chester, asking that application be made to the Lords of the Treasury to allow him to exchange lots 19 & 20 on the plan for 37 & 38 as marked on the plan and as agreed to by the Corporate Estate Committee.
4th April 1853. Henry Maddock to Corporate Estate Committee offering to give up his shop in the Exchange as he has taken another, on the conditions he states.
5th April 1853. John Walker from the Clerk of the Peace's office, to the Chairman of Finance Committee asking if he may order a book
11th April 1853. Letter from the Office of Assessed Taxes, Chester, to J.F.Maddock, asking him to cause Mr.Wm.Hope to send the parchment duplicates of Land and Assessed Taxes for the year just closed, to him for examination and transmission to Mr. Inspector Williams.
27th April 1853. John Philpot to J.F.Maddock re St.John's rentals.
6th May 1853. Meadows Frost at Chester to the J.F.Maddock, asking for the enclosed to be inserted in the notices calling the Council together next week. With:-
6th May 1853. Notice of motion - that the Treasurer be instructed to produce at the next monthly meeting of the Council a financial statement of the Corporation properly ...... that all negotiations for loans be suspended, & all propositions for leases be deferred until after the debate on the financial statement.

10th Nov. 1853. Circular letter from Roderick Impey Marchison, Chairman of the Royal Geographical Society, to the Mayor of Chester, solliciting support for honouring the memory of Lieut. Bellot of the French Navy, who was recently lost in his second voyage with British seamen in search of Sir John Franklin.
