Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Drafts of circular despatches sent to the West Indian colonies in general, or to certain of the colonies. Includes two draft circular letters to missionary societies forwarding a report on 'negro education' and providing information about the Parliamentary grant for that purpose. Final versions of circulars may be found in the series CO 854. This volume also includes some internal Colonial Office memoranda. Subjects covered in circulars and memoranda are as follows: Circulars:

  • Termination of apprenticeship scheme;
  • Capture of liberated Africans returned to Sierra Leone;
  • Act to amend Act for the abolition of slavery;
  • Commons request for returns of religious establishments;
  • Establishment of special magistrates in the Leeward Islands;
  • Admiralty provision of steam vessels;
  • Additional article to slave trade treaty between UK and Netherlands;
  • Disposal of liberated Africans;
  • Apprenticeship of liberated Africans;
  • Request for return of convictions at Quarter Sessions;
