Documents submitted to the Committee of Enquiry on Restitution, vol 1. <p>The Committee of Enquiry on Restitution was appointed by Baron Henderson, Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs on 17 May 1951 'to examine the progress made in the disposal of claims under Law 59 in the British Zone of Germany'. Judge Denis O'Sullivan was appointed as chairman of the Committee. <p>Letter addressed to Lord Henderson from A L Eastermann of the World Jewish Congress [WJC], dated 25 July 1950, expressing concern that 'there is a danger that the existing laxity on the part of the German authorities and the pressure exercised upon them by groups directly involved are likely to result in a serious curtailment in the implementation of the restitution measures in existences if and when Allied control is suspended and relaxed'. <p>Several miscellaneous reports providing numerical information on the number of cases received, disposed of and pending in the various Laender. Includes a statistical return from May 1951 compiled by the central claims registry in Bad Nenndorf with a summary of the country of residence of claimants and a breakdown of 'claimed valuations according to type of property and showing number claimed of each type'. Some 278 claims for works of art [unspecified] are recorded, valued at 16,170,544 Reichsmarks in total. <p>Documents from the Restitution Board of Review, Herford, Westphalia, reviewing the decision made on 5 February 1951 at an oral hearing of Oberlandesgericht Hamburg on the claim of Lucy Borchard and Anna Vogel for the restitution of real estate [not specified] sold under duress in 1940. <p>Correspondence between the Justice Ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia and Dr Amelunxen of the Land legal department, dated April 1951, concerning the possibility of speeding up the ongoing restitution proceedings in the state. <p>Collection of circa 100 newspaper clippings from various print sources documenting 'opposition to the restitution program' among the German public, dated February-May 1951. <p>Copy of a memorandum by Benjamin B Perncz of the Jewish Restitution Successor Organisation [JRSO], dated May 25 1951, providing an overview of 'problems connected with the restitution of identifiable property' such as a the large number of claimants, the difficulties posed by the currency reform of 1948 and political opposition in Germany to the process of restitution. <p>Copy of an undated document outlining the general provisions of the Allied Kommandatura of Berlin [consisting of British, American and French chiefs of staff] for the restitution of identifiable property to victims of Nazi oppression. <p>Several miscellaneous inspection reports of German courts carried out by the restitution authorities in the British Zone. No specific reference to cultural property. <p>Correspondence between Jewish organisations [WJC, JRSO and JTC] and legal experts representing the British and American High Commissions in Germany, dated June 1951, concerning the pace of restitution and the problems that might be encountered in future should the Occupation Statute be lifted. No specific reference to cultural property. <p>Legal documentation concerning the 'Ordinance supplementing the law concerning missing persons, declarations of death and the determination of the time of death'. No reference to cultural property.</p>
