Description
Petitioners
William, prior of Bath.
Name(s)
William
Addressees
[Not specified].
Occupation
prior of Bath
Nature of request
The petitioner recites [at length] that previous kings of England have granted and confirmed that they would not be subject to providing sustenance for royal assignees. However, several of the petitioner's predecessors in response to requests by Edward I, Edward III and Richard II received individuals to corrodies. After the death of Berwick, Clement Merk, who then held the corrody surrendered Berwick's patents that he had given him to Dunster, Berwick's successor. Now, after the death of Dunster, the present petitioner was chosen prior, and John Tretheac, to whom Dunster had a corrody is still living and in possession of the corrody to the great impoverishment of the petitioner's poor estate. He requests that the king will consider the premises and do full right to the petitioner according to his title and right before declared.
Nature of endorsement
23 May in the 13th year at Westminster, it was agreed by the lords of the council that the chancellor associate to him the justices of both benches and do justice on the contents contained in the present petition, calling the sergeants of the king at law, his attorney, and other so interested. Present: the Lords of Gloucester, Cardinal, York, Ely, Lincoln, Norwich, Huntingdon, Stafford, Suffolk, Hungerford, Bath, Kent, Cromwell, treasurer, and the keeper of the privy seal.
