Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Abbess and convent of Chatteris.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The abbess and convent of Chatteris state that the manor of Kersey in Suffolk was once in their seisin, but that with the assent of the then abbess and convent, it was leased to Adam de Kokefeld and his heirs and assigns, to hold from the abbess and convent and their successors for £10 annually. The abbess and convent have always been seised of this rent from all the tenants, until the execution of Hugh le Despenser the son, who lately held the manor of his inheritance. The manor is now seized into the king's hand through his forfeiture, and as he held it in chief of the abbess and convent, in right of their church of Chatteris, it seems to them that it ought to be their escheat. They therefore ask that it might be returned to them, if the law allows, and if not, that they might have their £10 annually, so that they are not disinherited.
Nature of endorsement
Certain people are to be assigned in Chancery to inquire, in the presence of the keeper, into the things contained [here] and into other necessary articles; and when the inquisition is returned in Chancery, if it is found that the manor is held of the said prioress and convent as is claimed, and that she and her predecessors were seised until the forfeiture, orders are to be given to pay what is in arrears, from the time when the manor came into the king's hand, and to pay in future etc..
Places mentioned
Kersey, Suffolk
Chatteris, [Cambridgeshire].
People mentioned
Adam de Kokefeld
Hugh le Despenser the son.
Note
CCR 1330-3 p.79 is dated 10 December 1330, and is in response to a petition from the abbess: but it mentions the land having been in the hand of Edmund, Earl of Kent, and having come into the king's hand through his forfeiture, whereas this petition mentions only the forfeiture of Hugh le Despenser. It would therefore seem that this petition is earlier, from c. 1327, and that the manor was then granted to the Earl of Kent, giving the abbess another chance to petition, more successfully, when he was forfeited.
