Reference
SC 8/290/14490
Date
[1327-1332]
Description
Petitioners
Auger, Lord of Bats.
Name(s)
Lord of Bats, Auger
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged. A duplicate, in better condition but with a different endorsement, is SC 8/238/11884.] Auger, Lord of Bats, states that [Oliver de Ingham, formerly Seneschal of] Gascony, promised him and five others, for their service to the King, that they would be made bannerets, and have all the franchises and honours [granted to other bannerets of Gascony]. This honour has been granted to the other five, but not to him. He therefore asks to be made a banneret, which will be to the King's advantage as he will then be bound to serve him with ten men at arms, [rather than himself alone]. He asks the King to order the Seneschal of Gascony [to inform himself of this matter], and to give him this grace if it is found [not to be to the King's prejudice].
Nature of endorsement
The Seneschal of Gascony is to be ordered to inquire into the things contained [in this petition], and to inform the king of this, and the king, thus informed, will speak his will on this.
Places mentioned
Bats, [Gascony, France]
Gascony, [France]
Nottingham, [Nottinghamshire].
People mentioned
[Oliver de Ingham, Seneschal of Gascony].
Note
The duplicate of this petition, SC 8/238/11884, is dated on the guard to 8 Edward III (25 January 1334-24 January 1335), but, as Oliver de Ingham was Seneschal of Gascony between March 1326 and February 1327, and between June 1332 and July 1343, and the petition says that 'jadis monsire Olyver de Hingham estoit Seneschal en Gascoigne', these petitions would seem would seem to date from 1327-1332. They can probably be more closely dated to 1330-1332 - the council at Nottingham mentioned here was probably the one held in October 1330.
