Content
Folio 192. Letter from John Kirkland, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southwell Union, to the Poor Law Board, asking for their approval on an individual case. This involves Mary Marshall, 23 years, and her illegitimate child Eliza Marshall, 7 months, inmates of the Southwell workhouse and chargeable to Edwinstowe [Edwinstow].Mary has found a situation as servant in Nottingham for £8 per year, and wants to leave Eliza in the workhouse and pay 1/6 per week towards her maintenance. The guardians of Edwinstowe do not object, and the Southwell Union guardians seek the Board's approval.Annotated; Mr Lambert presumes relief given to the child is considered as given to the mother, an able bodied pauper. Therefore the Board do not feel disposed to sanction it. A second anmnoatation, 'WGL' [William Golden Lumley], decline to sanction and state that as the mother is able to pay 1/6 weekly for maintenance, she can place it elsewhere.
