Description

Name(s)
de Seint Pol (Saint Paul), Pierre (Pey)

King.
Nature of request
Seint Pol makes a supplication for Vigne who is deceased, as he was sent into Spain carrying letters to obtain victuals to save Bayonne, but he was taken at Vitoria and ransomed for 100 li. Tornais, and afterwards put in more secure imprisonment and ransomed for £100 sterling. As Vigne was taken while taking messages for the king as the people of Bayonne attest, St Pol requests that the goods of those of Vitoria be arrested throughout the power of the king until the 100 li. Tornais and £100 sterling are levied for Vigne's alms.
Nature of endorsement
The king is not advised to grant letters of marque.
Places mentioned
Bayonne, [Guyenne, France]
Spain
Vitoria-Gasteiz, [Spain].
People mentioned
Domingeoun de la Vigne.
Note
The petition is dated to 1305-1306 as this petition seems to be part of an original file of Gascon petitions - SC 8/338/E1217-SC 8/338/E1260 - for which SC 8/338/E1228 seems to have been the cover petition. The dating of this group of documents is arrived at by the possibility of more closely dating several of the petitions in this group, and these are noted when necessary. In addition, almost all of the petitions bear the old PRO references to Diplomatic Documents 1542 and 1548.

For a petition possibly from the same petitioner, see SC 8/287/14349

The petition belongs to a probable original file consisting of SC 8/338/E1217- SC 8/338/E1260 of which SC 8/338/E1228 was probably the cover petition judging from its endorsement, see SC 8/338/E1228
