Description
Petitioners
Andrew (Andreu), Lord of Budos.
Name(s)
Lord of Budos, Andrew (Andreu)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Andrew, Lord of Budos near Bordeaux, nephew of the Cardinal de Fargues, makes two requests:1) He states that he has lost £2000 tournois of land and more because of being in the king's obeissance, and has had no compensation apart from the prevote of Barsac, worth only £100 annually, which was given to him by the Lord of Albret and Oliver de Ingham, then captains of the Duchy of Guyenne; but the king then gave four parishes of this prevote to the Lord of Landiras. He asks that the Seneschal might be ordered to inform himself of his losses and damages, and to give him compensation, and that he might hold the prevote as he has held it, notwithstanding the gift of the four parishes. And he asks that, if the Seneschal finds that this gift is prejudicial to the king and the prevote, it might be returned to its previous estate.2) He states that he lives near the king's enemies and does not dare to go to Bordeaux, except with a retinue of men-at-arms and foot soldiers; and that because of this danger and because he has several please pending before the Seneschal and the king's judge ordinary he has become so poor that he cannot maintain this retinue. He asks that the Seneschal and judge ordinary might be ordered to assign him some place at St-Macaire or closer to Bordeaux, to determine his pleas and to save him from this danger, notwithstanding the custom of the country. And he asks that he might be allowed to plead by proctor, and the party defend himself by proctor, notwithstanding the custom of the country.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] The Seneschal is to be ordered to hear the parties and to do justice; and to maintain the said Andrew in his possession as far as the laws and customs of the country can allow.[To second] The Seneschal is to be ordered to give him all the security and favour that he can on this matter, without offence to the law.[None on dorse]
