Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/286/14286
Date
[? c. 1340]
Description
Petitioners
William Raymond (Guilhem Ramon) de Claverie, sergeant-at-arms.
Name(s)
de Claverie, William Raymond (Guilhem Ramon)
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
sergeant-at-arms
Nature of request
William de Claverie, sergeant-at-arms, states that he has served the king and his father for thirty-two years and more, and has never asked for any reward. He requests the keeping of the gate of Bordeaux castle, with the keeping of the prisons, which Thomas de Scuris holds during pleasure, for term of life, and also the keeping of the tower of the same castle, which Berduc de Mestre holds for ten years, nine of which have passed.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have the keeping of the tower, when the term of the said Berduc is finished. With regard to the keeping of the gate, he is to sue to the king.
People mentioned
[Edward I], King of England
Thomas de Scuris
Berduc de Mestre.
Note
Dated to c. 1338 with reference to Carte, vol. I pp.72 (dated 20 November 3 Edward III (1329) (m.1 of C 61/41)), where the grant is made at pleasure, and 83 (dated 4 July 10 Edward III (1336) (m. 3 of C 61/48)), where the original grant for ten years from 30 May 5 Edward III is extended for a further five. The mention of thirty-two years' service to the king and his father would give a date of 1339 at the earliest, and, if nine years of this grant of ten years from 30 May 1331 have passed, this gives a date of 1340 (although this ignores the extension of the grant for a further five years). However, c. 1340 seems the most likely date. Check m.22 of C 61/52, dated 21 June 1340, and m.33 of C 61/53.
