Addressees
Council.
Places mentioned
Labarde, [Guyenne, France]
Aquitaine, [France]
Dax, [Gascony, France]
Monflanquin, [Guyenne, France].
Nature of request
Bernard de la Spare, Lord of Labarde, states that he has served the king well and loyally all his life in his wars in Aquitaine, and has been captured and imprisoned, and has sold much of his inheritance to pay his ransom. He requests the prevote of Dax for term of life and the town and castellany of Monflanquin for himself and his heirs. He also asks that all his tenants, free or vilein, wherever they are outside his power, might be free of watches, manual work, and charges not found in ancient charters.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the office of Dax: the gift of this office belongs to the Constable of Bordeaux, and the king does not wish to dismember what pertains to this office. With regard to the town and castellany: the king wishes to be informed how and in what way they were lost and recovered, and by whom, and how much they are worth annually.
Note
From the hand, and the petitioner's mention of having served the king all his life, this petition would seem to be datable to the latter part of the reign of Edward III, after the Treaty of Bretigny, and possibly after the outbreak of war again in 1369.
