Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/285/14224
Date
[? c. 1374-c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
William (Guilhem) de Mountandre (Montandre, Montendre), knight.
Name(s)
de Mountandre (Montandre, Montendre), William (Guilhem)
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Bourg, [Guyenne, France].
Nature of request
William de Mountandre states that he has served the king all his life, and has been given £40 sterling of rent annually by the king; but he has not received any of this. And in the present war he has lost all his lands, worth 200 marks and more, and as fine a fortress as any knight in the king's realm has; and he has nothing on which to live or to maintain his estate. He requests the castellany of Bourg for term of life, in compensation for the £40 of rent; and that he might be paid the arrears of the £40 for the last five years..
Nature of endorsement
It is answered.
Note
From the hand, and the petitioner's mention of having served the king all his life, this petition would seem to be datable to the latter part of the reign of Edward III, probably after the outbreak of war again in 1369. If this is the 'present war', and the petitioner has lost his rent for five years, this would give a date of c. 1374. This would agree with the dating of SC 8/159/7934 and SC 8/300/14973, possibly from the same petitioner. Check C 61/65 m.8, which is a grant of £20 sterling annually to the petitioner, from the lands formerly belonging to William Feriol, dated 16 February 27 Edward III (1353) and C 61/97, m.12, which is dated 1115 July 1283.
