Description (What the record is about)
-
- Petitioners
- Merchant vintners of Gascony.
- Addressees
- King and council.
- Occupation
- Merchant vintners of Gascony
- Nature of request
- The merchant vintners of Gascony ask that certain points in the charter granted to them by the king's father and confirmed by the present king might be upheld, and state that the Mayor of London harasses them on certain of these points, namely that twice in the present year, the seventeenth of the king's reign, he has sequestrated their cellars to see if there is any corrupt wine there, although according to the charter he only has the right to do this once a year, when the new wine is brought to each port. They also state that it is contained in their charter that all bailiffs and ministers of fairs, cities, boroughs and merchant towns should swiftly do justice to them in the matter of their grievances under merchant law, but that the Sheriffs of London and other sheriffs in the realm treat them under the common law. They request a remedy.
- Nature of endorsement
- Because it is contained in the charter granted to the vintners of Gascony that when the ships with new wines first land in the realm and power of the king, the old wines, wherever they are found in the towns or other places where the said ships have come, are to be examined and tried, if they are good and incorrupt, and it is not contained that this examination should not take place at other times, they are to sue to the king to clarify his intention on this. With regard to the wrongs done them contrary to the tenor of their charter, they are to show the charter in Chancery, and have a remedy for this there.
