Name(s)
Bertram; Curteys, Elys; Henry
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged and stained, and large areas are now illegible.]The petitioners request remedy against Verney, Wafire, Affarley and Drewe regarding attacks and threats made against them in the first year of the king's reign.
Nature of endorsement
Before the king and his council at the quindene of Hilary next.
Places mentioned
Bridgwater, Somerset
Bath and Wells diocese.
People mentioned
John Verney
Edward Wafire
John Affarley
John Drewe, mayor of Bridgwater.
Note
The petition refers to the attacks occurring during the king's first year. Men named John Drewe (or similar variants) served as mayor of Bridgwater in 1483-4, 1487-8, 1492-3 and 1497-8, which would suggest that the petition dates from the reigns of either Richard III or Henry VII. This would seem consistent with the handwriting.
