Nature of request
The prior of Hexham requests that the king will command that it be enquired of whether the church of Alston in Northumberland or Cumberland and according to what is found he will make his will. In the eyre before Cressingham and his companions they brought a writ of right against the prior for the church to which the prior answered by way of exception that he should not answer because the church was in Northumberland and not in Cumberland. The justices would not allow this and the king recovered the advowson. The prior has petitioned on this and the record has been searched and no record of his exception found.

The petition is dated to c. 1296 on the basis of the dating of the petition by Fraser, though the basis of this dating is not entirely clear (Northumberland Petitions, pp.46-7).
