[c. 1318-c. 1324]
Description
Petitioners
Prior of St Oswald Nostell Priory.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Prior of St Oswald Nostell Priory
Nature of request
The prior requests that he is discharged of the keeping of John de Hexham entrusted to him by the king, and that he be removed as the house is impoverished because of recent bad years and the devastation of their church of Bamburgh that ought to be of great support to them as a consequence of which he must consider dispersing his canons.
Nature of endorsement
Coram magno consilio.
Places mentioned
Nostell, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
Bamburgh, [Northumberland]
Jedburgh, [Roxburghshire, Scotland].
People mentioned
John de Hexceldesham (Hexham), canon of Jedburgh.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1318-c. 1324. The petition is dated to 1315-1326 by Fraser. The basis of this dating is not entirely clear though the petition must be some time after 1313 when the abbot of Jedburgh and his canons fled their abbey after the fall of Roxburgh Castle. However, the date range used here is not unreasonable and the reference to recent bad years presumably places the petition after the run of bad harvests between 1315 and 1318 so that a date of c. 1318-c. 1324 is perhaps a more realistic assessment.
