Nature of request
Letter to the Chancellor from the Mayor and Bailiffs of York, stating that, of the four hostages from Paris given to them for safe-keeping, one, William de Essars, died of the plague on 16 June last, and asking that they might be discharged and excused of his keeping. They also inform the Chancellor that another hostage, Matthew de Florie, is gravely ill with the same plague, which is currently raging in those parts.
