Reference
SC 8/296/14765
Date
[? c. 1335]
Description
Petitioners
William Bultel of Upshire in Waltham Holy Cross.
Name(s)
Bultel, William
Addressees
Chancellor.
Nature of request
William Bultel states that because he informed Bartholomew de Burcherssch, justice of the Forest, of the names of malefactors in the forest and in the King's parks in Essex, they, because of their hatred for him, have had him maliciously indicted of various felonies before Henry de Grey and his companions, justices of trailbaston in Essex, so that he has been arrested and imprisoned in Colchester. He asks that the record and process, and he himself, be brought before the King in his Bench to stand to right there, or to ordain another remedy, so that he is not wrongly put to death because of the enmity of these people.
Nature of endorsement
He is to sue in Chancery. He is to have a writ in Chancery to have the record and process, together with his body, brought before the King at the quindene of Easter next, for the reasons contained in this petition, and also because it is attested before the council that he is of good repute.
Places mentioned
Upshire, [Essex]
Waltham Holy Cross, [Essex]
Essex
Colchester, Essex.
People mentioned
Bartholomew de Burcherssch (Burghersh), justice of the Forest
Henry de Grey, justice.
Note
CPR 1330-4 p.293 is dated 21 March 1332, and would seem fairly likely to be the commission to Henry de Grey mentioned here, but the reference to Bartholomew de Burghersh as justice of the Forest would seem to date the petition to after 1335. The petitioner is mentioned as one of a number of people accused of hunting in the parks of the Abbot of Waltham Holy Cross in CPR 1334-8 p.145, dated 6 June 1335.
