- Nature of request
- The petitioners complain of errors in the record and process of a plea of trespass brought against them by the people of Southampton before Roger le Belers in the New Exchequer at the quindene of Hilary in the King's seventeenth year, which was brought against them through the maintenance of Hugh le Despenser the elder and the Bishop of Exeter. The petitioners requested a remedy from the King in his coronation parliament, and the King had the record brought before his council in that parliament, and then had it sent before Geoffrey le Scrop and his companions, then justices of the Bench, at Hilary in his second year, for them to correct any errors. They adjourned the matter, because of the difficulty of bringing judgment, and then new justices, Henry le Scrop and Henry de Hembury, were appointed, who confirmed the first judgment without examining the matter carefully. The petitioners ask that this record and process might be brought back into parliament, so that the errors might be corrected and a remedy provided.
