The Local Government Reorganisation Division was set up in 1965 to deal with matters arising from the proposed local government reorganisation to be introduced by the Local Government Act 1972.
It had responsibility for the setting up and contact with the Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales. Its other responsibilities included liaison with existing local authorities, policy concerning the formation and organisation of the new local authorities and community councils. It also supplied advice to other Welsh Office divisions on local authority matters.
Following the implementation of the 1972 Act the division had, by 1974, become part of the Local Government and Housing Group and thereafter, its functions were carried out by different divisions within the group. The division was wound up in 1995, its functions being exercised by the Local Government, Water and Sewerage Division to 1977, followed by the Local Government Division.
In 1993 the Local Government Reorganisation Division was reconstituted to carry out similar functions relating to the reorganisation of local government during the early 1990s.
