Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Llanbadarn Fawr.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The burgesses of Llanbadarn Fawr make five complaints and request a remedy:1) They state that they are enfranchised by the charter of Edward I and the confirmation of the present King to plead all manner of pleas in their town, but in the time of Gilbert Talbot, Justice of South Wales, they have been compelled to answer at Carmarthen, where they fear to go because of the enmity between themselves and the Welsh.2) They state that they used to have housebote and haybote between the Aeron and the Dovey, but that this has been taken from them by the great men of the country.3) They state that they used to have a market every Monday, according to the charter of Edward I and the confirmation of the present King, but that this has been taken from them by the great men of the country.4) They state that although they are enfranchised by the same charter to be free throughout the realm of England, customs are demanded from them in Bristol, Chester, Shrewsbury, Dublin, Drogheda and other places.5) They state that the people of the country buy and sell oxen, cows, sheep, wool, iron and other merchandise in their houses and hamlets, to their great detriment.
