Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/238/11859
Date
[? c. 1309]
Description
Petitioners
Hywel ap Kyner, free man of Botvaeo.
Name(s)
ap Kyner, Hywel
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioner states that he petitioned the King's council at Northampton about his land at Aber, which he holds freely of the gift of Llywelyn, Prince of Wales, and was answered that the Justice should inquire into the truth of this, whether the land was given freely or for an annual rent, and inform the court, and that in the meantime nothing would be asked from him for the land; but because the Justice, Hugh de Audley, was removed from his post, he could not do this. He asks that a similar command might be given to Roger de Mortimer, Justice of Wales, as he is being harassed and distrained by the King's ministers for the annual rent.
Nature of endorsement
They are to come to the Exchequer with the Chamberlain on the morrow of All Souls.
Places mentioned
Botvaeo [unidentified], Caernarfonshire, [Wales]
North Wales
Northampton, [Northamptonshire]
Aber [unidentified], [Caernarfonshire, Wales].
People mentioned
Hugh de Audleye (Audley), formerly Justice of North Wales
Lodowisus, (Llywelyn) [ap Gruffudd], Prince of Wales
Roger de Mortuo Mari (Mortimer), Justice of Wales.
Note
From the endorsement, this petition would seem to be a contemporary of SC 8/238/11857, SC 8/238/11858 and SC 8/238/11861. A note on the guard claims that it is another of the petitions formerly enclosed with CCW 1244-1326 p.297, which is dated 18 September 1309. This date would agree with the hand, and with the mention of Hugh de Audley, Justice of North Wales in 1306, and of Roger de Mortimer, appointed Justice of Wales in January 1308.
