- Jordan Gaufredi makes six requests:1) He complains that his enemies have conspired with the Mayor of Bordeaux to destroy a stone gateway he was building in a wall, declaring it to be unduly and unjustly built; and that he has complained, but has been able to find no justice because of their favour. His house has been attacked, and his associates wounded and even killed. He petitioned the King at Carlisle for justice, and has been granted a day. He asks that this might be inquired into, that such a process might take place against the guilty as to be an example to others, and that the gateway might be rebuilt.2) He states that the King has received him into his protection, as asks that his family and goods might likewise be received into the king's protection, and that he might have letters on this to the Seneschal of Gascony, to give him one or two servants to protect him.3) He requests permission to bear arms and be accompanied by twelve men or more, as he sees fit.4) He asks that Raymond de Caudmo, who served the King's father in the war at his own expense, might have the office of King's serjeant (serviens) in the Duchy of Gascony, and might not be deprived of this by the machinations of the Mayor of Bordeaux.5) He requests permission to build a bridge for the greater ease and security of himself and his family.6) He requests letters patent to the Seneschal of Gascony to compel his debtors to pay him by means of law.Arnold, Bishop of Poitiers, asks that he might be able to acquire annual rents to the sum of £1000 of Tours to support certain chaplaincies that he is founding.William Arnold de la Casa states that his brother was on the King's father's council for twenty-five years, and was captured and badly treated by the French during the war, and asks that he might not be forced to put the noble fees in the Duchy of Aquitaine acquired by his late brother outside his hand.John Martini asks, in payment of his debts and in consideration of his losses in the war, that the Constable of Bordeaux or his lieutenant be ordered to grant him the bailiwick of Calamone at the farm that others are willing to pay.
- Nature of endorsement
- [On face, to first] The King will specify in a writ good and discrete men to inquire into the excesses and injuries of his officers, and that what should be corrected is to be corrected.[To second and third] On the aforesaid, the Seneschal is to be ordered to provide Jordan with protection and defence as seems expedient to him.[To fourth] The ordinance of the Seneschal on such things has been granted.[To fifth] The Seneschal shall be ordered to inform himself as to whether this can be granted without prejudice to the King and others, and he is to inform the King.[To sixth] The Seneschal is to be ordered that, calling those who are to be called, he is to do justice to him according to the laws and customs of those parts.[To the request of Arnold, Bishop of Poitiers] The Seneschal will be ordered to inform himself of what rents he specifically wishes to buy, on what conditions and in what places, and what prejudice this would be to the King and to others; and he is to inform the King of this.[To the request of William Arnold de la Casa] It is answered elsewhere that the King [has no intention] of granting this at present.[To the request of John Martini] He is to be paid like others. The ordinance concerning bailiwicks is entrusted to the Seneschal. [None on dorse]
