- Nature of request
- Letter from the Bailiffs and community of Norwich to Edward II, stating that on 24 November 1302 Peter le Maunner and Thomas le Fruyter, merchants and citizens of Norwich, loaded a ship belonging to Peter Burgthard with goods and merchandise at Great Yarmouth, to carry to St-Valery-sur-Somme, but that they were stolen at sea by malefactors from Flanders, who took them to Bruges. Edward I wrote to the Bailiffs, Echevins and other good men of Bruges, and to John, Count of Namur, then regent of Flanders, asking for due restitution and satisfaction, but to no effect, and three similar letters sent by Edward II to Robert de Bethune, Count of Flanders, have also been unsuccessful. They ask the King to provide a suitable remedy for their fellow-citizens, so that they may recover their goods or their value, as well as their damages.
