Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/233/11648
Date
[c. 1308]
Description
Petitioners
Menaud de Goudz, valet of the Count of Foix.
Name(s)
de Goudz, Menaud
Addressees
King.
Occupation
valet of the Count of Foix
Nature of request
Goudz requests the king's letters be directed to the seneschal of Gascony to deliver the bailiwicks of Lalinde and Ste-Foy to him to hold to him until he has received £400 from the issues and rents, he being the attorney for . . . people of Gascony to whom the sum is due. The seneschal is to do this if the constable of Bordeaux or his lieutenant does not do this as he was commanded to do by earlier letters.1)
Nature of endorsement
To the bishop of Chichester, the chancellor.2) Let letters be made to him under the great seal in a competent form of the contents in this petition.
Places mentioned
Lalinde, [Guyenne, France]
Ste-Foy-la-Grande, Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
[John Langton], Bishop of Chichester and chancellor.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1308. The guard note suggests this date based on the petition probably being enclosed in C 81/60/219 but with the caveat that the petition has no pencil or sewing marks to match the warrant. The notes are reciprocated to a degree in the guard notes on the warrant. It seems likely that the association of the two documents is incorrect and that the warrant actually enclosed SC 8/182/9088 as the stitching marks do match, and both documents bear the same archive stamps on the back. However, though this basis for the dating is now no longer acceptable, the petition is unlikely to postdate SC 8/182/9088 and C 81/60/219 by long so that a dating of c. 1308 has been adopted.
