Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/222/11082
Date
[c. 1387]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Holand, Earl of Kent.
Name(s)
de Holand, Earl of Kent, Thomas
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Earl of Kent states that the king lately granted him the marriage of the Earl of March, rendering 1000 marks per year until 6000 marks were paid. Following this, it was agreed that the Earl would pay 500 marks per year of the arrears in equal portions, beginning at Easter in the king's tenth year (1387), until payment was satisfied, and the Earl requests that these letters be renewed.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
People mentioned
[Roger de Mortimer], Earl of March.
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1387, the date given in the petition for the first of these payments of arrears, but by Rees to c. 1384, the date of the original grant. This original grant was made to the Earl on 23 August 1384, but makes no provision for the payment of arrears, and by the original terms the last payment of these 6000 marks would not have been due until c.1389-90. Presumably the earl's payments were soon in arrears, and this petition formed part of an attempt to resolve this; hence it probably does date to c. 1387.
