Nature of request
The mayor and burgesses request that they be granted an oyer and terminer of trespasses made to the burgesses by the bishop of Norwich and his bailiffs concerning the making of ditches around the town, and they request Spigurnel and Ratford who are assigned to hear and determine the pleas of the bishop against them be assigned with others of the king's council.1)

The petition is dated to 1298-1299 on the basis of a series of oyer and terminer commissions issued between 11 August 1298 and 18 February 1299, though it seems likely that one of the commissions issued on 28 November 1298 may be is response to the petition (CPR 1292-1301, pp.382, 458, 460).
