Nature of request
Richard de Oke states that he holds the land of Toppinghoe in Essex of the enfeoffment of the late Baldwin Filyol, but that the Sheriff of Essex has seized it into the King's hand claiming that it is held in chief of the King: but he does not know by what service, and does not wish to inquire without a direct order - and other lords are claiming that it is held of them. He requests a writ of inquisition to inquire into whether this land should be held of the King or of someone else, and by what service. And if of the King, he asks the King's grace that he might be able to hold of him.
